A Condemnation of the naming of the Moffett building and its Freeport wing

A resolution passed by the Students' Assembly of the Students' Association, the legislature of the student government of the University of Texas at Austin on May 2, 1995.

Whereas, James Robert Moffett is the Chief Executive Officer of Freeport-McMoRan; and

Whereas, Freeport-McMoRan owns the world's largest gold and copper mine in Irian Jaya (West Papua), Indonesia, a mine whose arsenic laden tailings are dumped directly into local rivers, causing mass sedimentation and killing vegetation for 1 kilometer on each side; and

Whereas, the construction and operation of this mine has displaced the Amungme people and other indigenous groups from their ancient homeland; and

Whereas, Freeport-Indonesia is owned in part by the Indonesian government, whose armed forces, according to the Australian Council for Overseas Aid, have tortured and murdered civilians and alleged guerillas, sometimes with the help of Freeport security personnel; and

Whereas, the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxic Release Inventories continually cite Freeport-McMoRan as the nation's largest air, water, and land polluter; and

Whereas, Freeport-McMoRan is attempting to build near Barton Creek, thus polluting Edward's Aquifer in violation of Austin's water quality ordinances; and

Whereas, Freeport-McMoRan has filed seven (7) lawsuits against the City of Austin at the cost of taxpayers; and

Whereas, James Robert Moffett has promised to bankrupt the city of Austin through lawsuits and political lobbying; and

Whereas, student fees have funded 32% of the costs for the new molecular biology building, and Freeport-McMoRan and the Moffett family combined have funded only 12%; now therefore:

Be It Resolved that the Student Association condemns the naming of the new Molecular Biology Building the Louise and James Robert Moffett Building; and

Be It Further Resolved that the Student Association also condemns the naming of one wing of the aforementioned building the Freeport wing; and

Be It Further Resolved that the Student Association encourages the Board of Regents to rename the aforementioned building in a manner which reflects the ideals of the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Texas,

Be It Further Resolved that the Student Association condemns the failure of the Board of Regents to seek student input on decisions that affect students.

(Note added by Robert S. Boyer. It is likely that Freeport-McMoRan would strongly dispute much of this resolution on a factual basis, e.g., the arsenic and part about participating in the human rights abuses. See, as one example, a letter from Freeport-McMoRan Vice President Tom Egan.)
